Fast to Faith: Weight Loss & Hormone Support for Women Over 35

#255. He Was Supposed to Die… But He Found the Real Cure

Dr. Tabatha Episode 255

He Was Supposed to Die… But He Found the Real Cure

In this eye-opening episode, I sat down with Dane Johnson—a board-certified nutritionist who nearly died from Crohn’s disease—to unpack what really causes gut issues, autoimmune flares, and chronic illness. After being wheelchair-bound and told surgery was his only option, Dane chose a different path: healing from the inside out.

He shares how environmental toxins, stress, and even our everyday habits damage the gut—and why most diets and supplements won’t work until you address the root cause. We dive deep into faith, functional medicine, and the power of ownership in healing. If you’ve been told there’s no way out of your diagnosis, this episode might just change your life.

He Was Supposed to Die… But He Found the Real Cure
(00:00)
Dr. Tabatha: Welcome back to the Fast to Faith podcast! I am so excited to introduce you to someone whose story and mission are deeply inspiring. Dane Johnson is a board-certified nutritionist and founder of Crohn's Colitis Lifestyle. After facing a near-death battle with Crohn’s disease, Dane refused to accept a lifetime of medication and surgeries. Instead, he committed to healing from the inside out—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

(01:18)
Dane Johnson: I want to dedicate this episode to anyone suffering from disease, especially gut health issues. I know what it’s like to feel hopeless and isolated. But healing is possible—it's not easy, but it's worth it.

(01:35)
Dr. Tabatha: That’s so powerful. And what makes your story even more compelling is that people wouldn’t guess from looking at you that you’ve gone through something so severe. But you weren’t always this healthy, right?

(02:06)
Dane Johnson: Definitely not. I dropped to 122 lbs, was in a wheelchair, couldn’t walk, shower, or even use the bathroom on my own. I lost my identity and lived in deep shame. It was the lowest point of my life.

(03:05)
Dane Johnson: I had been acting in commercials and horror films in California when my health collapsed. I ended up on a feeding tube, failed biologics, and was told I needed surgery to remove my colon.

(04:25)
Dr. Tabatha: What were your first symptoms?

Dane Johnson: It started as mild IBS—bloating, urgency, cramping. I was eating the Standard American Diet: pizza, fast food, sugary drinks. Over time it worsened, and after a year of misdiagnoses, I was finally told I had ulcerative colitis.

(05:41)
Dane Johnson: Research shows people with IBD have 50% more microplastics in their gut. These toxins, like VOCs and parabens, damage your microbiome, stress the immune system, and trigger autoimmune conditions.

(08:29)
Dane Johnson: The gut's mucous membrane acts like a protective wall. When it’s destroyed, fungal overgrowth like candida and gram-negative bacteria can thrive, spreading up the GI tract and weakening immune function.

(10:16)
Dane Johnson: Inflammatory bowel disease diagnoses doubled between 1999 and 2015. The farther you are from the equator, the more likely you are to experience autoimmune issues. We are seeing an epidemic of gut-related diseases.

(11:17)
Dane Johnson: Even wearing polyester in the sauna can increase toxin absorption. These chemicals damage gut lining, feed bad bacteria, and create a domino effect that leads to leaky gut and systemic inflammation.

(14:01)
Dane Johnson: As your gut lining weakens, you become more sensitive to foods. People start reacting to seeds, salads, and grains their grandparents could eat without issue. It’s not the food—it’s your terrain.

(15:16)
Dane Johnson: Diets like carnivore or low-FODMAP may stop the damage but don’t heal it. Healing requires correcting the root damage—not just managing symptoms.

(16:57)
Dane Johnson: I teach people to categorize supplements into five types I call “solving supplements.” Instead of blindly taking 20 pills a day, learn to identify what each one does to support your healing.

(18:12)
Dr. Tabatha: That’s such a helpful analogy—like learning a new language. You get better over time.

(19:36)
Dane Johnson: Healing isn’t about being perfect. It’s about self-empowerment and learning how to respond for life. That’s why I call my program “Shield,” not “Walk on Water.”

(21:07)
Dane Johnson: If you detox without supporting your elimination pathways, you’ll experience a Herxheimer reaction—your body becomes over-toxic. You need your liver, kidneys, and colon to be ready to carry out the toxins.

(23:31)
Dane Johnson: Some people are just more sensitive. Their immune system is on high alert. That’s why recurring SIBO or candida happens. You have to keep your foundation strong.

(24:58)
Dane Johnson: My extreme pain gave me extreme purpose. If you shortcut the healing process, you won’t build the habits that keep you healthy. Pain becomes purpose if you let it.

(26:16)
Dane Johnson: It took me years to break my addiction to gluten and processed foods. I was pretending to be a healthy actor, but I was two seconds from an ER visit.

(28:42)
Dane Johnson: I was done with guessing. I decided I wouldn't put anything in my mouth I didn’t believe in. That clarity changed my life.

(30:15)
Dane Johnson: I started my mornings differently: cooking my own food, journaling, cleaning my space. Within a week, I was sleeping through the night for the first time in months.

(31:39)
Dane Johnson: This journey is hard. You may not feel better after two weeks on a diet. But don’t quit—healing takes time and conviction.

(32:55)
Dane Johnson: Restaurant seed oils are inflammatory. I carry a seed oil card and hand it to the waiter. Simple habits like this matter.

(36:32)
Dane Johnson: Your healing journey is also about leading others. Your children are watching you. You don’t just heal for you—you heal for them.

(39:04)
Dane Johnson: Inspiration fades. You need consistent action. Keep learning, keep showing up. That’s how you build a new identity and nervous system.

(40:10)
Dane Johnson: Within seven days of prayer and purpose, I finally slept through the night. Don’t be afraid to get on your knees—healing includes your spirit.

(41:21)
Dane Johnson: I’d rather carry the pain than see my kids suffer. Through my pain, I found purpose—and I still have my family, my voice, my eyes, and my calling.

(42:53)
Dane Johnson: You can’t think your way to healing—you have to act your way there. New actions create new feelings, and new experiences shift your nervous system.

(43:57)
Dane Johnson: Just showing up to the gym was a win for me. That simple action gave me strength. Healing starts with the smallest steps.

(45:27)
Dr. Tabatha: This conversation was so honest and courageous. For every woman feeling trapped by chronic gut issues—there’s hope. Healing is possible.
